प्राचीन काल की अपेक्षा पूर्व-मध्यकाल में स्त्रियों की सामाजिक स्थिति में गिरावट आई। इस काल का साहित्यिक सूत्रों से ज्ञात होता है कि पुत्री की स्थिति परिवार में पुत्र की अपेक्षा बहुत गिर गई थी। कथासरित्सागर में भी लिखा है कि पुत्र सुख का प्रतीक है और पुत्री दुख की मूल है। मौर्य युग के बाद स्त्री षिक्षा की परम्परा एवं अवस्था क्षीण होने लगी थी और पूर्व-मध्ययुग में तो यह बहुत ही मंद पड़ गई थी।
